Historic New Orleans Hotel - A French Quarter Landmark

On October 15, 1849, Daniel Henry Holmes opened one of the most important parts of New Orleans history - the D.H. Holmes department store. Operating on Canal Street for 140 years, the store became a French Quarter treasure, and gained a national reputation as one of the outstanding retail establishments in the country. The City of New Orleans and Historic Restoration Inc. joined together on a common mission to preserve and readapt the use of this pre-Civil War landmark by turning it into a unique 251-room luxury hotel.

Opened in April 1995, Chateau Bourbon - A Wyndham Historic Hotel has been transformed from a pre-Civil War landmark into a magnificent 20th century hotel. An exterior restoration to the building's 1913 façade and a complete interior renovation incorporates the building's rich past into the hotel's vintage chic allure. Alabaster pillars from the D.H. Holmes soda fountain adorn the Clock Bar. The lobby retains its historic charm with marble accents in the floor and iron columns preserved from the historic structure. The cypress exposed beams in the Atrium Courtyard date back to the original 1849 building.

The famous "clock", a favorite meeting place for generations of New Orleanians - missing since the store's closing in 1989 and returned in 1995 by two preservationists - hangs in its original location on Canal Street. Underneath the clock is the life-size bronze sculpture of Ignatius Reilly, funded by the hotel and the Downtown Development District, which mimics the opening scene of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize winning novel, A Confederacy of Dunces.
